Evan McGrath was born in Oakville, ON and skated with the Oakville Rangers his entire youth hockey career. After one season with the Oakville Blades (OPJHL), McGrath was a first round draft pick for the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL Priority Selection in 2002 (12th overall).

The center had a great career with the Kitchener Rangers. and in 2002/03, they were the CHL Memorial Cup Champions, as well as the OHL Champions. The following season, McGrath and the Rangers made it to the playoffs once more. He was part of the CHL Top Prospects Game and the OHL All-Star Game. The following year saw McGrath on the All-Star Team again. The Rangers made it to the playoffs every season that McGrath was with the team (2002-2006).

McGrath was part of the Canada U-18 Team at the World Junior Challenge U-18 in 2003/04. In the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, he was chosen in the 4th round, 128th overall by the Detroit Red Wings.

McGrath turned pro in the 2007/08 season, and was not off to a great start, registering only 14 points. McGrath was assigned to Toledo of the ECHL with hopes of getting his scoring going. It worked, as he racked up 15 points in nine games with the Storm.  McGrath appeared in a career-high 78 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) in 2007/08. He netted 35 points for the team, finishing +26 for the season. McGrath skated with the Griffins until the 2010/11 season. At this time, he went overseas to play in the Allsvenskan league (second-highest league in Sweden after the SHL).

The next five seasons (until the end of 2014/15) saw McGrath with the Oskarshamn, except for a brief stint in the SHL with Frolunda and Vasteras (Allsv) in the 2014/15 season. McGrath returned to Oskarshamn during the 2014/15 season, and is registered on their 2015/16 team roster.

McGrath is married to Maddison Gilmour, daughter of Hockey Hall of Famer Doug Gilmour.
