Want To be A Referee? Applications Open May 1st!
Submitted By Nathan McAnsh on Friday, April 26, 2019
Thank you for taking an interest in joining the officiating ranks of Oakville Minor Hockey! Please follow the instructions below regarding the application and hiring process.

Your application must be submitted PRIOR to your attendance at a recruiting day

Each year we receive approximately 50 applications from those wishing to join the officials here in Oakville. For development reasons, very few officials are hired each year - typically 10 or less.  This offers each hired official the best opportunity to improve and succeed in this position.

To better equip us in the hiring decisions, and for the purpose of expediting the process, every attempt is made to follow the timeline below.

1. Application (May 1st to Recruiting Day)

 2. Recruiting Days (June-July)

  • Recruiting Days will be held in the months of June and July.  Notification of dates will be sent following receipt of application. Purpose: gather further info, conduct interviews, and entertain questions. There will be windows of time for you to attend on one of these days.
  • Attendance at one Recruiting Day is MANDATORY

 3. On-Ice Skate (June-July)

  • Skates will be one hour in length and will focus on specific skills needed for this position
  • Attendance at one skate is MANDATORY

 4. Review and Hiring (July - August)

  • Applications will be reviewed by the Referee in Chief and Senior Officials
  • A decision will be made on the successful applicants
  • All applicants will be contacted and informed of the decisions

 5. Clinic Registration and Attendance (September - October)

  • Successful applicants enrolled in an OMHA Officiating Clinic
  • Cost of clinic is typically around $100 to $170 depending on age and level
  • Respect in Sport Activity Leader Program is a requirement for all applicants age 16 and over

 6. Other Requirements

  • POLICE RECORDS CLEARANCE (PRC) with VULNERABLE SECTOR SCREENING (VSS) – you must have this before attending the clinic
  • Respect In Sport Activity Leader – you must have this before attending the clinic
  • Equipment
  • Code of Conduct acceptance
  • Online Registration in scheduling portal

Please Do Not Enroll in Any Clinic at this time, until notification of being hired. All clinic arrangements will be coordinated through the Referee in Chief and the OMHA or Other Clinic Provider.  Attendance at a clinic prior to being hired does not ensure a position.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Referee in Chief.
