Rep Specific Return to Hockey Update
Submitted By John Verdon on Thursday, August 6, 2020
Greetings Rep Rangers and aspiring Rep Rangers,

First, I hope that you and your families are all safe, healthy, happy and enjoying this great summer…and NHL playoff hockey!

Speaking of hockey…wow! This past Friday-of-a-long-weekend’s ‘Return To Play’ announcement from the OHF (the Ontario Hockey Federation who governs minor hockey in Ontario) and Saturday’s subsequent announcement from the OMHA (the Ontario Minor Hockey Association – our direct governing body) contained some surprises.

We knew that the OHF had been working hard on a plan with the province but unfortunately we were not able to see it before it was released and therefore unable to prepare our coaches, VPs and Board to answer questions and there are so many questions. Despite that, we felt that we needed to get the news out ASAP to prevent a weekend of misinformation and rumours.

Now, our top hockey minds (Jaan Luik, VP AAA, Jay Prentice VP AA-MD and their advisors) are developing the Oakville Rangers ‘Return to Play’ plan/proposal for Rep hockey that will be submitted to the OMHA and the Town of Oakville for approval. First and foremost, the plan will adhere to all OHF and provincial safety guidelines. Nothing is more important than the health of our kids and volunteers.

From a hockey standpoint, the plan will ensure a highly competitive, tiered (AAA, AA, A, AE, MD) development program with intersquad scrimmages during the early phases of Stage 3 and then scrimmages against teams in our Public Health Unit (Burlington, Milton, Halton) in the later phases of Stage 3 and finally, a detailed transition plan back to full 5 on 5, competitive-Rep-travel-hockey with other jurisdictions when/if the province reaches Stage 4. Essentially, there will be 2 sections to this season with start/end dates tbd by the province but we will be ready.

This is one of those times when the size of our club really helps. Quite simply, from a development and competition standpoint, there is no better place in Ontario to be playing hockey in Stage 3 than for the Oakville Rangers as we can build highly-competitive development/scrimmage groups from within our program because of the number and quality of our Rep participants. Then if/when Stage 4 is announced, our teams will hit the ground running and be in a great position to compete in our loops.

Rest assured, all hockey associations in Ontario will have to satisfy all of the OHF’s and the province’s guidelines. No club will have different rules or any advantages (besides our size advantage detailed above).
We will be finalizing our Rep Return To Play plan/proposal this week and sharing it with our Board, Executive, Office Staff and coaches for suggestions/improvements and then we will share it with the Membership.

RangersNation will come out of this challenging time better, stronger and safer than ever before. Thanks for your support!
