Print2021/22 House League Schedule

***** PLEASE NOTE *****
While every effort has been made to ensure this schedule is final, please be aware that this information is TENTATIVE and still subject to change without notice!!

Tiers and Placement
Depending on the number of registrants in each Division, most House League Divisions are broken down into a few Tiers:

  • Tier One: Red
  • Tier Two: White
  • Tier Three: Blue

Typically, Red (Tier One) are the more advanced players, White (Tier Two) is intermediate, and Blue (Tier Three) is entry level or beginners - but it does not always work out that way. The only real difference between the Red and White divisions is quite simple – when the coaches are drafting their teams, the Red teams are picked first. The only difference between White and Blue is that White picks before Blue. All tiers all get the same jerseys and socks, they play the same amount of games and have the same amount of practices. One division does not get "better" coaches or referees than the other. As a result of this, the Red division does tend to be a higher skill level than the White division, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that all the "best" players are in the Red division - that is almost never actually the case.

When the teams are being drafted the coaches are not picking from a pool of kids that have been specifically marked as "Red" or "White". They are looking at the entire selection of kids available in the age group and making their selections from there. They are not necessarily picking the 15-17 "best" kids available – they are picking 15-17 kids to create what they feel will be a strong team. Coaches are allowed to, can and will pass over players with a higher rating to select the players they want on their team. That is a combination of forwards and defence, of left and right-handed shots, offensive-minded and defensive-minded players, and the list goes on. Kids that have played together before and have a good chemistry, kids with attitudes that work well for the room. The evaluations and the individual skill of the players is only one small piece of the puzzle. Each coach has their own logic and values to help them decide who they select to build the team structure that they are looking for.

Depending on the number of registrants it is also possible that some Divisions will be amalgamated. For example, it is common that U16 White and U18 White are merged together to form a single Division. On the rare occasion that a Division grows too large, a fourth "Green" Tier is added that drafts after Red and before White.

What Tier will my child be placed in?
That is a very common question this time of year, but it is impossible to answer that question prior to the draft. It all comes down to who the coaches choose for their teams, and skill is only one small part of that selection. We will not know what division your child is in until the teams are drafted, and the coaches have made their selections.

PLEASE NOTE: in order to maintain competitive balance within each Division, requests to be placed within a specific Tier will not be accepted

ORHC Pre-Season and Evaluations
Is there anything left that doesn't have a "COVID-19" wrench in it? Our Pre-Season and Evaluations are no exception to this. Proper evaluations are a critical component to drafting balanced teams, but we also recognize that after last season the kids don't want more skills and drills, they just want to get out there and play. That being said, we are excited about the approach we are taking this season. We are confident that following the Pre-Season the coaches will be well equipped, informed, and prepared when they come to the draft, and we think the kids are really going to enjoy it as well.

Funny thing about kids, they all come in different shapes and sizes - especially when we are looking at a group of thousands of players between 4 and 18 years old... One size does not fit all, which is true of the Pre-Season and Evaluation process as well. Please see below for details pertaining to each specific Division:

  • U9 and Younger Divisions: Emails have already been sent out by the House League VPs with details of the Evaluation Skates and Schedules. If you are registered for House League for the upcoming season in U9 or younger, including the Fast Forward Beginners Club, and have not received an email with your Evaluation Schedule please email Lauren Caringi at [email protected].
  • U10 to U15 Divisions: Each player will be participating in a number of Exhibition Games during the month of October. A page dedicated to the details of the Pre-Season and it's schedule will be posted shortly.
  • U16 and U18 Divisions: We don't usually do evaluation skates for these age groups as, by now, the coaches already know the kids really well. However, last season being what it was, we felt an evaluation would be of benefit this season. Evaluation Skates will be conducted on October 2nd, each player will be receiving an email with their individual evaluation schedule a couple of days prior to that.
  • U21 Division: U21 also typically would not have an evaluation, but (just like with U16 and U18) we felt it would be beneficial for the coaches to at least get a peek at the kids before they draft their teams. Not a formal evaluation, we know these kids (can we still call them kids at that age?) have zero interest in that, but we are offering a few free skates and scrimmages on September 21st and 23rd. This will be a change for the players to shake off the rust and a chance for the coaches to get a look at them.

Note that most Divisions mention Goalie Development sessions in their schedules. Don't be alarmed that you aren't familiar with these - they haven't been announced yet! Some of the details are still being ironed out, and the specifics of this exciting new initiative will be announced in the coming weeks.
