MPW AA Team take GOLD in their first tournament
The Oakville Rangers Minor Peewee team travelled to Peterborough on Thursday September 14th to attend the Peterborough Pete’s versus the Oshawa Generals game to kick off their 2017 / 2018 season. The next morning the Kawartha Lakes AA tournament began with an early 9:15am game against the host Peterborough Pete’s squad. With a few changes to the team from the previous season, the team fell into a groove and took the first game 2 to 1.

The next challenge came that afternoon as the boys took on the Guelph Gryphons, a team they play in the Tri- County Bowen division. A 4 to 2 win lifted their confidence to finish off the first day of the round robin play.  Saturday morning paired the team against the 2016 / 2017 OMHA champs the Milton Winterhawks. After 2 periods the Winterhawks had a 3 to 1 lead, but with 7 minutes left to play in the third period, the Rangers scored 2 quick goals to tie the score at 3. With just over 1 minute to play in the game, Milton scored the go ahead goal and the Rangers succumbed to their first loss of the season. Saturday afternoon paired the Oakville team against the Toronto Royals to finish our round robin play. A 3 to 0 victory provided the first shut out for Oakville and a guarantee that they would play on Sunday!!

Bright and early Sunday morning started with the the quarter final game against the Ottawa Valley Silver Sevens. The boys started out a little tired, but picked up speed in the last two periods and solidified their position in the final round by winning 4 to 1. It was only fitting that the team would play for gold against the Milton Winterhawks, a strong team that they play in their Tri-County Bowen division! After one period of play neither team could place the puck in the opposing team’s net! At the 8 minute mark in the 2nd period, the Winterhawks open up the scoring and go ahead 1 to 0. Oakville answers at the 5 minute mark with a goal to tie the game at 1 to 1. After another period, a decision could not be finalized so in accordance with the Kawartha Lakes AA tournament format the game would be decided by a shoot out. The format required each team to declare 5 shooters and each team would shoot on the opposing goalie simultaneously. After 3 shooters on both sides could not find a way to score, Ryan Choi puts a goal into the Milton net as Kieran Jessome denies the Milton player at the other end of the rink. The final two shooters were denied goals and the Oakville Minor Peewee AA team took home our first tournament win of the season.

The team is represented by Thomas Bagnall, Jack Donolo, Nick Filice, Tyler Colwill, Zach Wright, Josh Broglio, Ryan Choi, Theron Tsiapalis, Ben Theron, Jack Dinsmore, Nathan Tetley, Kyle Smrz, Lucas Weir, Kieran Jessome, Evan Young, Ethan Chau and Quinn Shaw.
