Tyke 1, 2, and 3 Teams to Return for the 2018-19 Season!
Submitted By Nathan McAnsh on Friday, June 15, 2018
Last month we updated you on the Hockey Canada mandate for players 8-years-old and under to participate in Modified Ice Programming and the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club's support of this new programming.  However, we also recognized the need for an advanced skills program for Tyke aged players and committed to finding an option for these players under the new Hockey Canada mandate. The Oakville Rangers are proud and excited to announce the return of our Tyke 1,2, and 3 teams in half ice format!

2018/19 Tyke 1, 2, 3 Hockey

Fall Tryout dates are being determined and will be announced once finalized

The Tyke 1, 2 and 3 teams are for players born in 2011 and will abide by the 2-Team, Half-Ice model mandated by Hockey Canada.

These teams will follow an advanced skills curriculum and will participate in half ice games with teams outside of Oakville.  The logistics for league play in the Tri-County Minor Hockey League are currently being finalized. More information on league structure and schedule will be shared once available, below is what is currently known:

  • Teams will compete in the Tri-County Minor Hockey League
  • All Tyke 1, 2 and 3 Select teams will participate in Half Ice programming
  • Team Rosters will consist of 16 Players and 2 Goalies
  • Games will be following the 2-Team Model

What is Half-Ice Hockey and the Two Team Model?
The Two Team Model is a way of dividing the teams to support the Half-Ice hockey mandate. Tri-County's Tyke Select Division will be utilizing the Two Team Model (as will the ORHC Tyke House League). With this model, 8 players and a goalie from each team goes to each of the two benches, and the two opposing teams share the bench, using a single door. There are two officials on the ice, one on each half, and two games running simultaneously:

Understanding the difference between Tyke 1,2 and 3 Teams and the other ORHC Select teams
The primary difference between the two is actually pretty simple - Select players from Novice and up also play on a House League team and will play less "away" games. Tyke 1, 2 and 3 players only play on their respective team and not in addition to a House League team as playing on two teams is not permitted under the new mandate.
