The below information applies to Oakville Players trying out for a team outside of Oakville. If you are looking for a Waiver or PTS to try out for an Oakville Rangers team please click here for information.
This is a very common question at Tryout time but one that, unfortunately, does not usually have a simple answer. Determining whether you require any additional paperwork for your tryout can be complicated. On this page we list out the information you'll need as clearly and concisely as we can, but it is almost impossible to cover every possible scenario. As an Oakville Resident, the first thing you have to understand is that you reside within the Lake Ontario Region (LOR). As a resident within the LOR you are governed by the LOR Regulations. These regulations can be found on the OHF Website at https://www.ohf.on.ca/rules/player-movement/lake-ontario-region/.
The Lake Ontario Region (LOR) is an area of the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) comprised of both the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) and Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA). All clubs in the GTHL (Toronto, Markham, Mississauga and Vaughan) as well as the surrounding OMHA centers (Oakville, Brampton, Richmond Hill, Markham, Ajax, and Pickering) are included in the LOR. It has been in existence since the 1997/98 season to address the unique geographical area in and around the GTA. As an Oakville Resident, which is within the LOR, you are governed by the LOR Regulations. These regulations can be found on the OHF Website at https://www.ohf.on.ca/rules/player-movement/lake-ontario-region/.
Residency refers to the Player's primary residence at the time of the Tryout. For example, let's say you currently live in Mississauga. You've purchased a new home and you know you are moving to Oakville, so you want to try out for an Oakville team. At the time of the Tryout you are still a Mississauga resident and have to approach the Tryout as a Non-Resident - you will need either a Permission to Skate or a Release from Mississauga before you attend the Tryout in Oakville. As a rule of thumb - if you are trying out in Oakville because you are moving to Oakville but you do not yet reside in Oakville please speak to Cheryle Hinder ([email protected]) prior to registering for the Tryouts.
There are several different Permission to Skate, Waivers, and Releases in the OHF and the OMHA, each with their own purpose and application. More information about each of these, including when to request which form and instructions on how to request them, is listed below. Scroll down, or if you already know which form you need use these quick links to jump to the form you are looking for:
For Players U13 & Younger
For Players U14 & Older
- You attended the Oakville Rangers Tryouts and you were not selected for the team, and
- You reside within the Lake Ontario Region (LOR), and
- The team you are trying out for is within the LOR
An LOR Release is required for all players in U10 to U13 trying out for a team other than their Home Center. If you meet the criteria listed above you will require an LOR Release before you attend the Tryout. As per the OHF LOR Regulations, to be eligible for an LOR Release you first must try out for and be released from the Oakville Rangers team in the Division you are requesting the Release from. If you are offered a spot on the Oakville Rangers team in your requested Division you will not be eligible for an LOR Release in that Division.
If you are granted an LOR Release, that Release only applies to the Division you tried out for. For example, let's say you tried out for an Oakville Rangers AA team, you were released, and you were issued an LOR Release. The LOR Release you have been issued only allows you to Tryout for other AA teams within the LOR. If after that you then want to try out for an A team you would have to first try out for the Oakville Rangers A team then, if you aren't selected to the team, you could request an LOR Release for A.
To request a LOR Release from the Oakville Rangers:
- Register for and attend the Oakville Rangers Tryouts
- if you are selected for the team you are not eligible for an LOR Release
- if you register for the Tryouts but do not attend (also known as a No-Show) you will not be eligible for an LOR Release
- if you did not register or attend tryouts (regardless of reason) you will not be eligible for an LOR Release
- if you are released from the Tryout proceed to step two (below)
- Return to the Tryout Portal (the site where you registered for the Tryout) and log in to your account
- Select the menu option for Tryouts I Registered for
- Once you have been released from the team you will see a new option on your Tryout Application to request a Release
- Click that button and follow the instructions to complete your request
Please allow 1-2 business days for your request to be processed. Rush requests will not be accepted. Once approved you will receive your LOR Release via email to the primary email address on your Tryout Portal account. You must print the approved Release and bring it with you to the Tryout.
Reminder!!
LOR Residents are only eligible to try out for teams within the LOR
The only exception to this rule is at AAA with a AAA Waiver
In Rep (this rule does not apply to House League) LOR Residents are only eligible to register for teams within the LOR, and LOR teams are only allowed to register LOR Residents. For example, Oakville is in the LOR and Burlington is not. As such, Burlington residents can not play on Rep teams in Oakville, nor can Oakville residents play on Rep teams in Burlington. The only exception to this rule is at AAA with a AAA Waiver. The AAA Waiver allows non-LOR Players to register for LOR Teams and LOR Players to register for teams outside the LOR.
- You were cut from the Oakville Rangers AAA Tryout, and
- You reside within the Lake Ontario Region (LOR), and
- The team you are trying out for is outside the LOR
OR
- You DO NOT reside within the Lake Ontario Region (LOR), and
- The team you are trying out for is part of the LOR
If you meet the criteria listed above you will require a AAA Waiver before you attend the Tryout. As per the OHF LOR Regulations, to be eligible for a AAA Waiver you first must try out for and be released from the Oakville Rangers AAA team in the age group you are requesting the Waiver for. If you are offered a spot on the Oakville Rangers AAA team in your requested age group you will not be eligible for a AAA Waiver. To request a AAA Waiver from the Oakville Rangers:
- Register for and attend the Oakville Rangers AAA Tryouts
- if you are selected for the team you are not eligible for a AAA Waiver
- if you register for the Tryouts but do not attend (also known as a No-Show) you will not be eligible for a AAA Waiver
- if you do not register for and attend tryouts (regardless of reason) you will not be eligible for a AAA Waiver
Once approved you will receive your AAA Waiver via email to the primary email address on your Tryout Portal account. You must print the approved Waiver and bring it with you to the Tryout.
The LOR Permission to Skate (PTS) is utilized by all U14 and older teams, except for U18 AAA, within the LOR. Where you played last season in conjunction with where you are intending to try out this season will determine if your PTS will be issued by your Home Center or by the Club you played for last season:
- A PTS is not required if you are returning to the same LOR Club you played for in the previous season
- If you are changing Member Partners you will request your PTS from the Club you played for last season
- If you are not changing Member Partners you will request your PTS from your Home Center
Changing Member Partners? What does that mean? The OMHA and GTHL are Member Partners of the OHF. When determining if your Home Center or your team from last season will issue your PTS, you have to look at whether or not you are moving from one Member Partner to another. For example, if you played on an OMHA Team last season and you are trying out for a team in the GTHL you are changing Member Partners and will request your PTS from the team you played for last season. But, if you are trying out for another OMHA team you would request your PTS from your Home Center.
- You reside within the Lake Ontario Region (LOR), and
- You are not returning to the same team you played for last season, and
- The team you are trying out for is part of the LOR
If you meet the criteria listed above you will require an LOR Permission to Skate before you attend the Tryout. Each Center has their own policies and procedures for issuing PTS Forms - the instructions listed below only apply to the ORHC.
To request an LOR Permission to Skate from the Oakville Rangers:
- Go to https://moha.sportskeeper.org/forms/PTS/LOR/
- Fill out and submit the form
- Upon approval, your PTS will be sent to the email address you provided on the form in step one above
Please allow 1-2 business days for your request to be processed. Rush requests will not be accepted. Once approved you will receive your Permission to Skate via email to the address you provided. You must print the approved PTS and bring it with you to the Tryout.
In Rep (this rule does not apply to House League) LOR Residents are only eligible to register for teams within the LOR, and LOR teams are only allowed to register LOR Residents. For example, Oakville is in the LOR and Burlington is not. As such, Burlington residents can not play on Rep teams in Oakville at AA or below, nor can Oakville residents play on Rep teams in Burlington at AA or below. The only exception to this rule is at AAA with a AAA Waiver. The AAA Waiver allows non-LOR Players to register for LOR teams or LOR Players to register for non-LOR teams.
- You are not returning to the same team you played for last season
AND
- You reside within the Lake Ontario Region (LOR), and
- The team you are trying out for is outside the LOR
OR
- You DO NOT reside within the Lake Ontario Region (LOR), and
- The team you are trying out for is part of the LOR
If you meet the criteria listed above you will require a AAA Waiver before you attend the Tryout. As per Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) Rules and Regulations, no Association is permitted to provide Waivers until the Tryouts have commenced. To request a AAA Waiver, please email [email protected] with ALL of the following information:
- Player’s Full Name
- Date of Birth
