As I am sure most of you are aware, one of the biggest changes in Ontario minor hockey is right around the corner – Open Borders (click here for more details).

As previously outlined (links to Oakville Rangers Open Borders short doc with link to large doc and OREPP announcement), the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club is committed to winning in an Open Border world. We are THE PLACE TO STAY if you are a Rangers today and THE PLACE TO PLAY If you’re an elite player looking for the best development and experience. Quite simply, the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club is THE PLACE TO BE!

Well, whether you are a current Rep Rangers player or an aspiring Rep Rangers player; the WORST time of the hockey season is almost upon us…TRYOUTS!

This year, the aforementioned Open Borders, a new Hockey Canada tryout portal and the OHF’s broad definitions of tampering, will likely amplify the stress, excitement, confusion, thrill, anticipation, pressure, disappointment and elation of tryout season.

To at least minimize the confusion and to manage expectations, please read this entire article carefully if you are planning to attend tryouts for the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club.

The Oakville Rangers tryout schedule will have the same start dates and essentially the same end dates as every other club in Ontario as per OHF rules. Below, please find an overview of tryout timing. Once finalized, the complete 2025 Spring Tryout Schedule will be available at https://oakvillerangers.ca/tryouts.

  • If you are trying out for U10 to U18 and you live in Ontario*, you can tryout for the Oakville Rangers
  • If you are trying out for U7 to U9 and you played or live in an OMHA centre, you can try out for the Oakville Rangers
  • If you played in an Outlaw League last year (Klevr, for example), you can try out for the Oakville Rangers this year. Players/families who choose Outlaw hockey from this point forward will not be eligible to play for an Oakville Rangers Rep team at U10 or U11. That is our own rule. There is absolutely no reason to play Klevr/Outlaw given what the Rangers offer so we have drawn a hard line and we will hold that line.

* If you were not an Ontario resident last minor hockey season but are now or will be before the 2025/26 season starts then please contact Cheryle Hinder in the Rangers office to get your paperwork squared away [email protected]).

No Ontario resident* needs any paperwork. If you played for the Rangers last year or played somewhere in Ontario last year, you don’t need any paperwork - no Releases or Permission to Skates required. You can simply register for Oakville Ranger Tryouts.

New this season, and in support of the new Open Borders policies, all tryout registrations must be processed through the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) - the same system you use to register your child for hockey each season. Below you will find detailed, step-by-step instructions that walk through the tryout registration process in the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR). Or, you can click here to download this document in a PDF.

The Tryout Registration fee for the 2025 Spring Tryouts is TBD for each level - AAA, AA, A, and B/BB. The Oakville Rangers are a not-for-profit Ontario Corporation and these fees cover ice, instructors and administration. If there is anything left after that it goes towards making Rep hockey more affordable to our families.

The ORHC offers a series of Prep Skates in advance of Tryouts. These optional skates give players an opportunity to hit the ice and have some fun while they get one more development session in before diving into their Tryout! Participation is optional and there are NO EVALUATIONS conducted during these sessions. Participation in Prep Skates is only for current players registered with the Oakville Rangers in the 2024/25 Season. Each session is 50-minutes long, at a cost of TBD, and is run by professional instructors. Please visit https://oakvillerangers.ca/Pages/28187/Pre-Tryout_Prep_Skates/ for more information and to register.

If you are not able to attend a Tryout due to injury, illness, or schedule conflict please inform the coach directly.

Several of the ORHC Programs consist of two teams - a "Red" Team and a "Blue" Team. Here is what you need to know:

  • Players can not register specifically for the Red or Blue team. When they register HCR they will be registering for the Division. For example, you register for the U16A tryouts - NOT the U16A Red or U16A Blue tryouts. They will be evaluated for both the Red and Blue team.
  • Red coaches can select a player at any point in the tryout process (before the 1st tryout, on the last day, or anytime in between). Blue coaches can also select a player at any time as long the Red coach agrees with the selection.

Many people ask, ‘Why don’t you just have 1 team at A and AA instead of 2? The answer is that we want as many players and families to enjoy/benefit form the Rep experience as possible. If we don’t give them an option, they will usually easily make a team in the GTHL or find a home elsewhere.

Another frequent question is, ‘Why don’t you have 2 equal AA or A teams vs. a top and bottom team? The answer is, our club and many other clubs around Ontario have historically tried a few iterations of the 2-team scenario - equal teams picked by outsiders, drafts, letting kids/families choose – all have led to poor experiences/outcomes which led us back to a 1st and 2nd team.

Many of the Tryouts may include one or more "Split Sessions". A split session is when a single tryout session is split into two individual skates. For example, it is a 2-hour session 7:00pm to 9:00pm, the 1st session is 7:00pm to 8:00pm and the 2nd session is 8:00pm to 9:00pm. You will only attend ONE of the skates. In the event of a split session, you will receive an email from the coach either the evening prior or the morning of the split session to inform you which of the two skates you are to attend.

All U14 players (born in 2012) as well as any U15 (born 2011) and older who have never attended a Body Contact Clinic are required to attend a Body Contact Clinic before attending a Rep Rangers Tryout. You will not be allowed to try out if you have not completed the clinic. Goalies do not have to attend these clinics. Please click here for more information.

Finally, you have made the team – congratulations! Here is what happens next… THESE DETAILS ARE COMING SOON!
