The Hockey Canada Modified-Ice Hockey Program
As everyone has been advised, hockey programs across Canada are now on modified ice (see figures below) for players 8 years old and younger. The ORHC already has a fully developed and implemented Hockey Initiation Program for 4, 5, and 6 year old players. In the 2018/19 Season we implemented the Modified-Ice Program for the 7 year old (Minor Novice) players. The 8 year old players (Novice) will be implemented in the upcoming 2019/20 Season.

Below are a few graphics and links outlining how the Novice and below seasons should run. More information can also be found on our ORHC Initiation Program Information page.

Helpful Links on Modified-Ice Hockey

The House League Stream
The House League programs consists of a few different components:

Jr. Timbits & The Initiation Program
These programs are for Players as young as 4 year old, up to and including 6 year old. The Initiation Program is further split in to programs: Fast Forward, IP, and Pre-Tyke. More information is available on the Initiation Program Information page.

House League Hockey
House League starts at age 7 for Minor Novice (Modified-Ice) followed by 8 years old for Novice (half season of Modified-Ice, half season of Full-Ice), then carries on up to Juvenile age. Typically House League consists of one practice per week as well as one or two games per week (depending on the Division). More information regarding the House League Evaluations and Schedules can be found on the Registration Information page.

Rostered Select Hockey
The Rostered Select program is in addition to the House League program, at an additional cost. Players selected for a Roster Select team will play on the Rostered Select Team in in addition to participating and playing in their House League team's practices and games. The Rostered Select Team is a travel team that will play extra games (to a max of three per month) and tournaments (to a max of three per season) each season. The Rostered Select team's are picked via a Fall Tryout process and typically consist of 17-18 players (including goalies) which, during normal the House League schedule, would be divided up on separate teams to ensure a balance of skill on each house league team.

The additional fees assessed to Rostered Select teams cover Ice Times, Referees and Timekeepers, Insurance, Sweaters and Socks, and Team Apparel. Individual Teams may request additional Fees from each Player for the Team fund; this amount will depend on Team Fundraising Activities, and is used to cover Tournaments, Extra Ice and other Hockey Development Programs that are implemented. The amount assessed to the Rostered Select Teams varies from team as it is dependent on what activities each team chooses to partake in, and how often. The team officials will communicate to the families how much the Assessment will be.

Hockey Skills Program
This is a program for anyone from the ages of 4-12 typically which allows for a slower introduction to the sport. It focuses 100% on skating and individual skill. There are no official hockey games scheduled and consists of 10 bi-weekly on-ice sessions. This can be done as a stand alone program or can be combined with your Hockey League Registration for an additional fee. This is usually used for children who are starting older and want to see if they would enjoy hockey without playing any games and focuses on skill development. As well, it is a great supplement to House League Hockey schedule to allow for players to gain individual skill if they are thinking of playing more competitive hockey in the future. The program is run by Certified Instructors.

The Representative (Rep) Hockey Stream
Representative (Rep) Hockey is the highest level of hockey that can be played within the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club. The ORHC is a proud AAA centre, with multiple teams in several of the A and AA Divisions. It is made up of Select Teams at the Minor Novice and Novice Divisions, MD Teams at the Minor Bantam, Bantam, and Minor Midget Divisions, and AE through AAA teams at almost every Division from Minor Atom to Midget. Rep Hockey consists of home and away (travel) games, development program for goaltenders and players, tournaments, and play-offs.

The Rep team is a “tryout format” in which players/parents must register with the ORHC Tryout System to attend tryouts. Tryouts for Rep Hockey are held in the Spring, following the conclusion of the OHF Championships.

Representative Hockey is a great way to build a young player’s skill level, work ethic, and team work while creating new friendships and having fun!

Please Note: Body contact is added to the Rep game starting with the Minor Bantam year. MD is non-contact in all Divisions. The ORHC provides a Body Contact clinics which teaches Players how to safely deliver and receive a body check. These free clinics are mandatory for all Rep Players entering their Minor Bantam year, and is also made optionally available to all Rep players Bantam and above.
